Rigor is the result of work that challenges students’ thinking in new and interesting ways. It occurs when they are encouraged toward a new understanding of fundamental ideas and are driven by curiosity to discover what they don’t know.  —Brian Sztabnik

My synthesis of (now) over 1200 meta-analysis scream that it is the moment-by-moment decision making in the classroom by experts that makes the most difference to student learning. —John Hattie

In our popular workshop, SBAC: It’s not Your Grandmother’s CST, we introduced the concept of The Thinking/Learning Cube and suggested it can be a lens for analyzing and adjusting the level of rigor in classroom activities. Because of the request of participants for an opportunity to further explore this idea we have created this new workshop that does exactly that. In Rigor: A New Lens participants will:

  • Build a deep understanding of how both dimensions of the Revised [Bloom’s] Taxonomy compliment Webb’s Depth of Knowledge,
  • Create a reasoned argument for why ALL students must experience high levels of rigor as defined by Sztabnik,
  • Analyze classroom activities to determine their position in The Thinking/Learning Cube,
  • Evaluate student performance in order to adjust rigor and suggest next steps, and
  • Practice using the Cube to make better moment-to-moment decisions, which Hattie has determined make the most difference for        increasing student learning.

Please join us this March and make The Thinking/Learning Cube a critical part of your toolbox for ensuring that every student is college and career ready.
